New Australian citizenship test enters into force

2 October 2007 14:47

A new test for those wishing to become Australian citizens has come into force, it has emerged.

As of October 1st 2007, those with permission to reside permanently in Australia and wishing to become citizens are required to sit a multiple choice citizenship test.

The pass mark for the test is 60 per cent.

However, only those between the ages of 18 and 59 will be required to take the examination; those with certain disabilities and those applying under certain residency schemes are also exempt.

"We believe that it is important for new citizens to demonstrate that they have at least basic English and they understand the responsibilities and privileges of being an Australian citizen," said Kevin Andrews, Australian minister for immigration.

"For those who have not passed the test, a print out of their results will give them information about their test results," he added.

The test's questions are derived from a publication produced by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, entitled Becoming an Australian Citizen.

Australia is located on the world's smallest continent.
