Manchester just behind London, league table shows

27 September 2007 16:46

The city of Manchester is second only to London when it comes to the best cities for business, it has been revealed.

According to the results of a study by Cushman & Wakefield, a firm specialising in property advice, Manchester came-in in second place, ahead of Birmingham, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Indeed, among the large organisations with a presence in the city are the Royal Bank of Scotland and Bank of New York.

"The city centre and Trafford have the highest number of start-ups. In Bolton, Bury, Rochdale and Oldham, it's not on the same level," said Chris Fletcher, policy director at the Manchester Chamber of Commerce.

"More businesses than ever are starting up, but in the knowledge and service economies they don't have to employ a lot of people," he added.

Cushman & Wakefield drew its results from a poll of 200 companies.

The city of Manchester was the target of a bomb attack in 1996 by the Provisional Irish Republican Army.
