Employee pregnancy 'tricky ground for SMEs'

25 September 2007 17:41

Small to medium-sized businesses (SMEs) need to tread carefully when dealing with the issue of maternity leave, according to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).

It is especially important for companies that have small numbers of staff to have a contingency plan in place, the FSB advised.

FSB spokesperson Belinda Webb stated that in the past many women have been discriminated against by their employer because they have had to take maternity leave.

She commented: "There have been so many cases where women have been discriminated against.

"It has to be borne in mind that if you've got a company that has four employees and one of them gets pregnant, it's like half of the workforce has gone. So it's such tricky ground for small employers."

There are many options in place for companies facing the issue of maternity leave and it is easy to look at guidelines, added Ms Webb.

The FSB was formed in 1974 and has over 205,000 members.
