London finance workers 'among highest paid'

18 September 2007 17:12

People with finance jobs who are based in London or the south-east are some of the highest earners in the UK, a new study suggests.

A report from Ledbury Research, which analysed figures from HM Revenue & Customs, indicates that for the first time, more than 500,000 people in the UK are earning at least six-figure salaries.

The data reveals that the financial services industry is the source of most of these high-earning careers, followed by accountancy jobs and those in law.

Additionally, 60 per cent of people earning at least £100,000 live in London and the south-east, the research states. A total of 68 per cent are men.

Commenting on the findings, James Lawson, research director at Ledbury Research, said that those making large sums may still not feel like they are living a luxurious lifestyle, as such expenses as school fees and mortgages can be very costly.

Recent research by Recruiter magazine found that financial services positions, such as banking operations jobs, grew during July.
