17 September 2007 16:39

Migrants who have lived in Australia for 18 months have an employment rate of 97 per cent, according to new government research.

The Longitudinal Survey of Immigrants to Australia also found that those with better English language skills were more likely to find employment.

Carried out by the Australian department of immigration and citizenship (DIAC), the study discovered that the average salary for a skilled migrant who has been in the country for a year and a half is AU$47,000 (£19,700).

Commenting on the results, Kevin Andrew, the minister for immigration and citizenship, also said there had been an improvement in employment rates for "family-stream migrants" with employment rising from 80 per cent between month seven and 18 to 94 per cent.

DIAC has previously announced that during 2006-07 a total of 148,200 permanent visas were granted for skilled migrants.
