29 August 2007 16:46

Accountancy ranks fourth in popularity regarding career aspirations, new research suggests.

A survey of 1,000 people conducted by market research agency BMRB reveals that accountancy trails IT, law and medicine to grab the fourth spot on popular career choices, accountancymagazine.com reports.

However, the poll also found that some stereotypes around accounting exist, with nearly half of respondents saying that those in the profession were boring.

"Perceptions clearly need to be changed - the stereotypical views about accountants seem to be firmly set in people's minds," said Michael Snyder, senior partner at Kingston Smith, according to the news provider.

He added that accountants possess a wide skills set which includes business knowledge and people skills, as well as a way with numbers.

Accountant Tony Sinclair recently told the Herald that there are "two or three vacancies" for each recent accountancy graduates.
