Britons 'gain advantage' for Aussie work visas

21 August 2007 16:17

New criteria which would reward those who speak English fluently could benefit Britons who are looking to work in Australia, it has been suggested.

The Australian government is planning to introduce amendments to current immigration standards which would award five extra points to people who speak English to a high standard, www.globalvisas.com confirms.

Liam Clifford, director of the visa specialist, said that this stronger position likely means that more UK nationals will choose to work down under.

"With one of the highest standards of living in the world, as voted by the UN each year, a rapidly-growing economy, a low crime rate and an excellent educational system, Australia has plenty to offer," he said, according to onrec.com.

The Australian government recently increased its quota for skilled migrants from 97,000 to 102,500 for 2007-08.

People seeking accountancy jobs have made up the highest proportion of migrants so far this year, according to government figures.
