Teens 'oblivious' to engineering and technology careers

A majority of teenagers are either vaguely aware or oblivious to the career possibilities within the technology and engineering sectors, it has been revealed.
According to reports, a study by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has found that 90 per cent of those between the ages of 14 and 15 are blinkered to information on careers in the two sectors.
"We must look at all our activities and initiatives to see if they are really making an impact with our pupils," said Jan Stapleton, head of education for those between the ages of five and 19 at IET.
"Engineering brings wealth creation to the economy and it is imperative that the UK attracts more young people into engineering and technology to tackle the growing skills shortage," she added.
The study also found that of the leading ten career choices for children within the same age group, engineering did not make it into the list.
Britain's IET was established in 1871.
