ONS predicts rise in adult working-age numbers

25 October 2007 09:34

The UK's Office for National Statistics (ONS) has predicted an increase in the number of working-age adults, it has been revealed.

According to reports, the ONS believes the number of working-age adults will increase as a result of rises in the number of migrants to the UK, in conjunction with changes to the regulations governing retirement.

Indeed, the country's population levels are expected to increase at a level in excess of ten million over the next quarter of a century, with migration being but one cause; birth-rate increases and lower mortality levels are also thought to be responsible.

"More important for the rate at which the economy can grow without increasing inflationary pressure is the growth of the population of working age," said Vicky Redwood, a representative from Capital Economics.

However, data from the ONS also shows that this year - for the first time - there will be more pensioners in Britain than children.

The ONS was created following the merger of the Central Statistical Office with the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys in 1996.
