New immigration system could 'affect employers'

18 October 2007 15:47

The UK's forthcoming immigration system could negatively impact upon some employers, it has been claimed.

According to reports by Personnel Today, Ann Fairweather, the head of policy at the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, the implementation of a new points-based system could negatively distress those industries already affected by a shortage of skills.

"There is a real danger that the points-based system will not deliver the workers that are needed in areas such as hospitality and social care," said Ms Fairweather.

"Construction is also an area of increasing concern," she added.

Announced this week by Liam Byrne, minister for immigration, the new process for admitting migrants will enter into force early next year.

In related news, the UK Independence Party recently announced that were it to be elected, the party would implement plans to impose a five-year ban on immigration.
