Young 'taught wrong things'

4 December 2007 17:43

The UK's youth are being taught the wrong things for the workplace, it has been claimed.

According to reports by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), in addition to young people receiving tuition that teaches them the wrong skills, the numbers entering into vocational training is insufficient.

The IT sector in particular was highlighted for arming students with the wrong sets of skills.

"Often we see people coming out of university without exactly the right skills and knowledge employers are looking for," said Tom Hadley, director of external relations with the REC.

"There's also a role for business, which could be more proactive in terms of trying to sell careers to young people, and get them to understand more what jobs are about," he added.

The REC is a UK-based organisation established to represent the interest of the country's recruitment sector.
