Milton Keynes identified for 'employment strength growth'

11 December 2007 17:53

Employment growth in Milton Keynes grew at a significant rate compared with other towns and cities, it has been claimed.

According to the results of a study by the Centre for Cities, independent specialists in research in the field of urban policy, Milton Keynes topped the study of employment growth, compared with the other UK towns and cities under examination.

Among the other locations within the top ten are Doncaster, Derby and Sunderland.

However, within the study it was also identified that of those of working age in Greater Manchester, 35 per cent are unemployed.

In neighbouring Stockport, the level of unemployment is lower at 20 per cent.

"These figures show that it's less 'grim up north'," said Dermot Finch, director for the Centre for Cities.

"[However,] cities like Birmingham, Manchester and London … need to address the deep-rooted wealth inequalities on their own patch … if they are to continue to grow," he added.
