'Most UK jobs going to migrants'

13 December 2007 17:03

A majority of the jobs created in the UK over the last decade have gone to migrant workers, it has been claimed.

According to data released by the Statistics Commission, of those jobs that have been created for people under the statutory age of retirement, 300,000 have been filled by individuals who were not born in the UK.

The commission was created by the current government in 2000 and is responsible for the supervision of the work conducted by the Office for National Statistics.

In total, since 1997, 1.7 million additional jobs have been created.

However, figures released by the UK government set the total at 1.1 million.

"The 1.1 million figure is calculated using estimates made in 2003 of what the population would be in 2007," said the Statistics Commission.

"However, the increase in the employment level since 1997 [2.7 million], was calculated using population estimates made in 2005 of what the population would be in 2007," it added.
