16 January 2008 17:10

Recent work by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) has highlighted data showing how many visits an Ipswich-based library received in 2007.

According to reports by the Evening Star, the local County Library is officially one of the country's busiest libraries, after it was discovered that a total of 868,088 visited last year.

CIPFA was established in 1885 as the Corporate Treasurers' and Accountants' Institute.

"This survey illustrates clearly the major role libraries still play in the cultural life of our towns and cities," said Julian Mund, director of operations at CIPFA.

"Whether they are used for borrowing books, films and music, doing research or using the internet, libraries are at the heart of our communities."

The study found the country's busiest library to be the Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library. Over the course of 2007, it received a total of almost 1.5 million visitors.
