Employer help sought in fight against obesity

24 January 2008 16:31

The participation of employers is being sought for the fight against obesity.

According to reports, employers have been called upon to target workplace obesity, as part of a government strategy, entitled Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives.

The new strategy was announced by Alan Johnson, the UK's secretary for health, who confirmed his belief that the root of the problem lies in a tendency to eat too much and perform too little exercise.

"Employers can support their staff in a number of ways: making healthy options available in staff canteens, providing fitness facilities and investing in facilities for cyclists," said Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives.

Mr Johnson added: "Tackling obesity is the most significant public and personal health challenge facing our society. The core of the problem is simple."

The report cites a number of benefits to employers of tackling obesity, including increased levels of morale and less absence related to sickness.

Aside from lifestyle choices, other factors believed to play a part in leading to obesity are genetic predispositions and illness.
