Union representatives 'push' for stronger employment rights

1 February 2008 17:04

Representatives from the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) have met with a number of politicians to lobby for stronger European employment rights, it has emerged.

According to reports Personnel Today, members of ETUC have met with politicians from the Czech Republic, France and Slovenia, taking the opportunity to protest against a process of wage moderation deemed to be excessive.

The group has argued that employee-spending capacity needs to be protected.

"Europe risks being perceived as a one-way street, where the share of wages is always going down. We cannot allow that to happen," said John Monks, general secretary of the ETUC, an organisation established in 1973.

"The ETUC is deeply concerned about the threat of growing social inequalities in Europe."

The meeting with ETUC representatives took place prior to a meeting between European Union employment ministers.

Spread over a total of 36 countries, ETUC has a membership base of 60 million.
