CIPD defends HR sector

4 February 2008 14:02

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has come out in defence of the human resources (HR) sector.

Following the publication of comments by Luke Johnson in last week's Financial Times (FT), the CIPD has come out in defence of the profession, stressing the importance of managing individuals well, reports Personnel Today.

Mr Johnson is the head of private equity firm Risk Capital Partners and the current chairman of Channel 4.

"Managing people well doesn't happen by chance," said Geoff Armstrong, director general of the CIPD, a firm established in 2000 and headquartered in London.

"It relies on HR people putting in place the evidence-based practices necessary to create effective leaders, excellent line managers and productive teams."

During the article in the FT, Mr Johnson described the HR sector as a "necessary evil" and a "burden".

Mr Johnson is also a columnist for the Sunday Telegraph.
