ITUC highlights gender pay divide

7 March 2008 17:02

A new report from the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) has highlighted the size of the worldwide pay divide faced by women.

New data released by the ITUC has identified that the pay divide between men and women around the world is now 16 per cent.

The organisation's findings are based upon a study across 12 different countries, involving a total of 400,000 employees.

"Despite decades of anti-discrimination legislation and changes in company rhetoric, the pay packets of women, whether they are in New York or Shanghai, are still significantly thinner than those of men," said Sharan Burrow, president of the ITUC.

The data has been published in an ITUC report, entitled The Global Gender Pay Gap, released specifically to coincide with International Women's Day, which takes place on March 8th.

Originating in the US, the history of International Women's Day goes back to 1909.
