Forthcoming sexual discrimination act 'a challenge'

Soon-to-be-implemented legislation governing sexual discrimination will be a challenge for employers, it has been claimed.
Entering into force on April 6th, the forthcoming legislation under revisions to the Sex Discrimination Act will present a number of new difficulties, as the authority of an employer will be weaker against a customer, in comparison to that exerted over an employee, reports Personnel Today.
"These new rules will affect any organisation that employs client-facing staff, such as bar and waiting staff, those who work in the professional services sector, as well as teachers and other public sector staff," said Stuart Chamberlain, an expert on employment law at Consult GEE, a service providing legal information online.
Specifically, under the terms of the legislative changes, an employer will become required to implement measures to protect members of staff from the actions of both members of the public and by customers.
Under the act, action can be taken against an employer who does not implement protective steps that are considered to be reasonable.
