Stress during pregnancy leaves 'lasting effects'

31 March 2008 17:39

The impact of stress during pregnancy can be long lasting, it has been claimed.

According to reports by the Scotsman, an academic from Edinburgh University has confirmed her belief that stress hormones created during pregnancy can actually damage an unborn child.

Dr Mandy Drake believes that these hormones are capable of crossing the placenta.

"I am concerned at these findings because there is a lot that can be done by employers to reduce working women's stress, such as reducing long hours and recognising that pregnant women do suffer fatigue and ill health," said Cathy Rogan, an advisor on rights for charity Working Families.

In related news, on average 30.2 working days are lost for every single case of anxiety, work-related stress or depression, according to data released by the Health and Safety Executive.

Feelings of stress can be lessened in a number of different ways, including through exercise and meditation.
