Report highlights impact of working long hours

A new report has highlighted the possible effects of working for long periods.
The recently published report from the Work Life Balance Centre highlights that a majority (76 per cent) of respondents have experienced feelings of stress while at their place of work; a total of 47 per cent also verified that over a period of a year prior to the poll, negative health effects associated with work-related stress had been felt, reports Norwich Union Risk Services.
Indeed, according to data released by the Health and Safety Executive, fatigue can lead to an individual experiencing a number of symptoms, including memory lapses and poor attention.
Despite these findings however, the 24/7 report found that long working hours aren't necessarily the problem and that the level of control experienced by the employee is an important factor.
"Those that might actually work fewer hours, but at the same time have less control over the amount of time they work, can suffer from work-related stress, or even from anxiety and depression," said Julie Hurst, a representative from the Work Life Balance Centre.
The findings of the study are based upon a poll of 2,300 persons.
