HSE seeks to dispel myths

7 April 2008 16:16

The UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has confirmed that hanging baskets of flowers are not prohibited under health and safety legislation.

Announced as part of the organisation's Myth of the Month series, the HSE has confirmed that hanging baskets are completely permissible under health and safety legislation.

The organisation's myth-busting series has brought attention to a number of falsehoods in the past, such as the idea that company employees are not permitted to erect decorations for Christmas

"Back in 2004 a town did briefly take down its hanging baskets over fears that old lamp posts would collapse. This was an overly-cautious reaction to a low risk," said the HSE.

"However, after quick checks the hanging baskets were replaced."

In December the HSE confirmed that not all risks need to carry warning signs and that practical measures should be implemented to counteract any risk, rather than just relying upon notices.
