Praise for corporate manslaughter legislation
7 April 2008 16:15
Praise has been offered in relation to new legislation governing corporate manslaughter and corporate homicide.
Ray Hurst, the president of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), has confirmed his belief that the recently introduced Corporate Manslaughter and Homicide Act 2007 will act to increase standards of health and safety in the workplace, reports Personnel Today.
On July 26th 2007, the act received royal assent.
"We hope the new law will prompt organisations to ensure they have strong health and safety leadership, effective systems and positive cultures," said Mr Hurst.
However, the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians, referred to the act as "the dampest of damp squibs".
The Corporate Manslaughter and Homicide Act 2007 entered into force on April 6th 2008.
The references to corporate homicide relate specifically to Scotland, with other parts of the UK making reference to the crime of corporate manslaughter.
