Minister calls for introduction of gradual retirement

8 April 2008 16:12

The UK minister for pensions has called for businesses to assist those over the age of 55 to retire at a gradual pace.

Shunning the sudden approach to retirement, Mike O'Brien has called for the adoption of the gradualist approach, on the grounds that existing models are now outdated and that the old method can be a traumatic experience.

"The idea that one day you work and the next you stop can be a shock to the system. These findings challenge the traditional 'one size fits all' approach to retirement," said Mr O'Brien.

"Many of today's older workers are rejecting the cliff-edge between work and retirement in favour of a gradual step down. And employers should help them to do this."

In related news, a poll by Ipsos MORI has found that on their first day of retirement, one tenth of all retirees' experienced negative feelings, such as sadness or anxiety.

Indeed, government advice on retirement recognises that the shift away from employment can present a number of new challenges and can be stressful.
