Survey highlights motivational failings of UK managers

10 April 2008 15:36

A new survey has found that a number of managers in the UK are not motivating the employees working beneath them.

Conducted by consultancy firm BlessingWhite, a company established in 1973, the study has found that workers in the UK are the second most detached in the world, second only to China.

Specifically, close to 25 per cent of respondents from the UK confirmed that, while at work, they were unproductive, unhappy or even disengaged.

"At this time of economic uncertainty, businesses need reliable and consistent leadership to inspire employees to achieve high performance and help them stay competitive," said Tom Barry, managing director of BlessingWhite in Europe.

"It is impossible to retain employees without the right level of managerial engagement."

In the UK, the number of respondents who described themselves as "fully engaged" was at 23 per cent.

The organisation's findings are based upon the questioning of 7,000 individuals, located in countries across the world.
