CBI disputes causes of gender pay gap

15 April 2008 17:07

Women are experiencing a pay gap because of the types of employment that they are in according to data released by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI).

The CBI has disputed that the gender pay gap between the sexes, which increases as women get older, is because of discrimination, reports Personnel Today.

The pay gap between the genders peaked for full-time workers aged between 40 and 49. It is 20.3 per cent for employees of this age according to figures released by the Office for National Statistics.

The CBI director of human resources policy, Susan Anderson, commented: "Women are most likely to work in lower-paid sectors than men. They also still take the lion's share of bringing up families, so their careers plateau, while men continue to progress."

In related news, ten local authorities in the Greater Manchester area have been ordered to pay out £75 million in compensation after admitting they discriminated against female employees, according to clickdocs.com.
