Excessive workplace smiling 'bad for health'

16 May 2008 16:41

Smiling too much while at work can negatively affect an individual's health, it has been claimed.

Indeed, according to the results of a study conducted by a team of researchers from the University of Frankfurt in Germany, excessive smiling at an individual's place of work can actually encourage the onset of illness.

Specifically, displaying levels of friendliness that do not reflect an individuals true feelings can generate a number of different conditions, including stress, a weakened immune system and feelings of depression.

"Every time a person is forced to repress his true feelings, there are negative consequences for his health," said Professor Dieter Zapf, one of the researchers behind the study.

Professor Zapf specialises in the field of human emotions.

Among those jobs identified as needing professional smilers are waiters, sales staff and call centre employees.

Established in 1914, the University of Frankfurt prides itself as being strong in the field of research, in an environment that is both "urban and open-minded".
