Work-life balance and dating at the office

25 June 2008 15:11

Keeping the work-life balance healthy via a relationship with a co-worker is more prevalent in some countries than others, according to new research.

CareerBuilder.co.uk discovered that Greek employees are the most likely to have started an office romance, with those in Germany least likely to, OnRec reports.

However, in the UK, it is over twice as common for women to date someone in a higher position than men.

And office romances in the UK received a 66 per cent approval rating, behind other countries such as Spain and the US.

But the research found that while British workers may be less inclined to date a colleague, those who do were the second most likely in the world to marry them.

Happy hour was discovered as the most popular place to strike up a bond between co-workers in the UK, with the company's holiday party or picnic the location for those in Sweden and Germany.

There was no distinction made as to what type of industry or position, such as marketing jobs or accountancy jobs, held a predisposition to office relationships.

According to online magazine Work Relationships, there are certain tips people can take onboard to manage their friendships in an open-plan office.

Offering to make tea and always signing birthday cards are just two of the advisory points for healthy work bonds, it added.
