Initiative launched for visually-impaired jobseekers
15 July 2008 12:06
A national campaign aimed at supporting more blind and partially sighted people enter employment is being launched today.
Hire Vision was developed by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) in partnership with the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, Liverpool city council and Social Firms UK.
According to the RNIB, a third of blind and partially sighted people of working age are in employment and the campaign intends to raise awareness of this.
It aims to create more opportunities for this group to work and "break down the barriers" to create more suitable positions, potentially including
direct marketing jobs or
jobs in tax.
Expert speakers and interactive workshops are planned for the scheme's launch event, which takes place today in Liverpool.
Ending avoidable sight loss is one of the RNIB's priorities as there is an estimated two million people in the UK currently at risk from this, the organisation states.
