Petition 'backs need for professionally-qualified accountants'

22 July 2008 16:42

Employees with CIMA jobs and ACA jobs may be in demand as a recent petition backed the opinion that professionally qualified accountants are needed.

The petition posted on the Number Ten website by a Alan Shooter, a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) was signed by over 4,000 people.

It called for regulation of the accountancy profession, noting that lawyers must have professional qualifications but anyone can call themselves an accountant, tax adviser or consultant.

Andrew Harding, managing director of finance and operations at the ACCA, said: "ACCA has watched Alan Shooter's petition with interest.

"We are pleased to see it has done so well."

He added that Liberal Democrat deputy leader Vince Cable recently tabled an early-day motion in the house of commons calling for the legal recognition of the term "accountant".

Last week, the ACCA warned that changes in personal allowances due to come into effect in September 2008 could cause confusion for employees and businesses alike.
