Business 'believe absences are non-genuine'

23 July 2008 17:09

Employees with accountancy jobs in London and elsewhere could be trying to pull the wool over the eyes of their bosses, as new research reveals UK business leaders believe half of absences taken from work are not genuine.

The survey from HR and payroll software provider MidlandHR found that 69 per cent of employers believe some people abuse sick leave, up by one per cent a decade ago.

However, a quarter of those questioned said they believe tracking such absences is unimportant, up from two per cent ten years ago.

Lawrence Knowles, managing director of MidlandHR, said: "It is surprising that such a relatively large number of those questioned see tracking absence as unimportant, especially in light of the high number of suspected non-genuine absences."

He added this research highlights the need for firms to properly assess absence levels and find out the impact sickness is having on their company.

In June 2008, MJF Accountancy reported the results of a Confederation of British Industry survey revealed employees were off sick for 6.7 days on average in 2007, compared to 2006.
