REC backs plans to protect vulnerable workers
5 August 2008 15:41
The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) has expressed its support for new government measures to protect vulnerable workers.
It said the government plans to raise awareness and promote workers rights are in the interests of both employees and law-abiding businesses and establish a Fair Employment Enforcement Board.
The Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform aims to better enforce existing laws while offering a phone line to employees in all industries to report any abuses, from
jobs in tax to marketing jobs.
Kevin Green, chief executive of the REC, said: "There is extensive regulation on the employment agency sector, but these rules mean nothing if they are not effectively enforced."
He added these government proposals would help deal with the minority of cases where workers rights are not respected.
The government said £6 million would be spent on these proposals to enhance the promotion of workers' rights and boost reporting of their abuses.
