Government 'to crack down' on rogue employers

5 August 2008 15:40

London recruiters will have to be aware of a new government drive to crack down on employers who take advantage of vulnerable workers and undercut honest firms, it has emerged.

The Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform has announced the establishment of a single telephone helpline for vulnerable workers to report abuses to its workplace enforcement agencies.

Staff with direct marketing jobs and those in other industries will be targeted with a £6 million information campaign to boost awareness of employee rights and their enforcement.

Pat McFadden, employment relations minister, said: "We want to prevent unscrupulous employers who undercut honest competition and prey on people who are fearful or so desperate to earn a living that they are open to exploitation."

She added there should be no hiding place for employers who are not prepared to obey the law and who instead exploit vulnerable workers.

Human resources portal Personnelltoday.com claims business leaders "breathed a sigh of relief" as the government crackdown on rogue employers did not include the introduction of new legislation.
