Skilled migration in Australia 'more successful than Canada'

Recent changes to the immigration policy in Australia have resulted in a turnaround in the effectiveness of the company's migration programme, it has emerged.
The report from Canadian Immigration was based on research from the University of Melbourne, which found the number of migrants who found work within the first six months after arriving in the county rose from 57 per cent to 81 per cent between 1995 and 2001.
This figure dropped from 64 per cent to 60 per cent in the same time in Canada.
Lesleyanne Hawthorne, associate dean at the University of Melbourne, said: "Since 1999, Australia, in contrast [to Canada], has used research evidence to exclude economic category applicants at risk of poor employment outcomes at point of entry."
It has done this through the expansion of English testing and credential assessment prior to migration, with bonus points awarded to migrants looking for work in high-demand occupations.
