Apprentices 'should be protected by minimum wage'

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has called on the government to include apprentices under the national minimum wage legislation.
It said this move would end exploitation of apprentices and reduce the number of individuals who drop out of the scheme because they cannot afford it.
The TUC has made a submission to the minimum wage apprentice exemption review of the low pay commission, recommending all apprentices be brought under the national minimum wage to boost the reputation and quality of the initiative.
Brendan Barber, general secretary of the TUC, said: ""Apprentices need to complete their training if it is to fully benefit themselves or their employer, so increasing completion rates is absolutely vital to the success of apprenticeships."
He added apprentices should benefit from the better pay and protection from exploitation afforded by the introduction of the minimum wage.
The apprenticeship scheme offers training for jobs in a number of industries, including accountancy jobs in London, where they will record and account for cash and credit transactions and be involved in recording payroll transactions.
